PROLOGUE
“Dies Irae, dies illa, solvet saeculum in favilla.”
It was an ordinary day, just like any other in the midst of summer, the 14th of July, in the Year of Our Lord 1347, when out of nowhere clouds black as pitch appeared and black rain began to fall from them. The light vanished, the earth began to tremble beneath our feet as though it too had become afraid, and the statues of ancient heroes began to weep thick, black tears. And when darkness had finally swallowed everything and mankind had lost all hope, the roar of a thousand horns tore through the air, and a symbol appeared in the sky. The symbol of the Circle.
THE WANDERER’S NOTES
We hid wherever we could. We wandered through dense forests, took shelter in old homesteads and ruined churches. We searched abandoned villages for scraps of food. Sometimes we managed to dig something out of the earth that was still fit to eat. Since the darkness fell, the earth has borne nothing. For months, we fled from the madness that had consumed our world. False prophets began preaching their own truths, promising salvation. Cultists took into their ranks anyone willing to swear allegiance to false gods. First they burned the books, then they burned the temples. Then they began burning those who had the courage to stand against them. That was why we had to run. Until they found our trail…
The dreadful blast of the hunters’ horn tore our group from sleep in the middle of the night. “FASTER! FASTER!” I could barely hold my rearing horse. Panic grew with every passing second as the roar of the horns drew ever closer. My companion charged ahead as I cracked the reins. Some of the terrified horses broke loose and fled into the forest, leaving several of our companions to their fate. If God is still watching us, may He have them in His care. Only three of us remained on the trail, riding towards the mountains. After three hours of frantic flight, we came upon an old ravine. We were too terrified to notice that it appeared on none of our maps. We headed upwards. After an hour of winding through narrow paths, we finally emerged onto open ground. Hooves struck the barren, stony earth, their echoes reverberating through the surrounding mountains. On the other side, we saw enormous basalt gates. The air grew thicker the closer we came. Then I noticed it. An enormous symbol of the Circle carved into the gates. “What do we do? We can’t go in there. Who the fuck knows where this place even came from!” “Honestly? I’d rather die inside than get fucking slaughtered by the cultists!” To this day, I still don’t know which would have been better…
Vast corridors carved into the cold rock stretched on for hours. The horses had long since refused to obey us. They began to rear and would go no farther, so we had to leave them at the entrance. Truth be told, I didn’t want to go any farther either, but at that moment I preferred it to being caught. When we entered the great hall, we saw it. A colossal obelisk, ten metres tall, with a thousand eyes upon every face. The pitch-black walls seemed to pulse beneath the surface, and the closer we came, the stronger the vibrations grew in our ears. Moonlight began to spill into the chamber, revealing its details. Wait, what light? The world has been shrouded in darkness for years!!! “RUN!!! RUN!!!”
And then all the eyes turned towards us.
